Net Zero House Tour

Fresh off their successful Geothermal Workshop, the Art of Being Green Projects (AOBG) team is bringing you yet another opportunity to learn about energy savings initiatives. On Saturday April 17th, AOBG will be hosting a bus tour to a Net Zero House under construction in Hudson, Quebec. Thanks to our partnership with Chris Weissflog from EcoGen Energy Inc., AOBG has been able to arrange a guided tour of this amazing project with Sevag Pogharian, the designer from Montréal Zero responsible for the design of this house.
Bus pick-up and drop-off locations have been arranged in both Perth and Carleton Place and time to explore the shops of the Hudson community has been included in the day’s agenda. There is also the opportunity to visit Hudson’s Spring Art Show. The cost of the day-long trip including the round-trip bus transportation, the guided tour of the Net Zero house and snacks on board the bus is just $50.00 per person. There are a number of interesting restaurants for you to choose from in Hudson or feel free to pack your own litterless lunch.
Description of the Net Zero House:
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced in February 2007 the 12 winners of its nationwide, competitive, demonstration initiative named EQuilibrium. During 2008, and 2009, these 12 projects proceeded into the construction and demonstration stages. The Alstonvale Net Zero House (ANZH), a grid-tied, single-family, detached house, located in Hudson, Québec, is one of these 12 demonstration projects.
The merits of the design proposals submitted to the EQuilibrium initiative were measured on the basis of how well they achieve: 1) net zero energy consumption; 2) a healthy indoor environment; 3) reduced resource consumption; 4) reduced deleterious impacts on the environment; 5) affordability to the target market; and 6) repeatability throughout Canada.
The ANZH strives towards net zero energy lifestyle by:
Achieving the target of a net zero energy house whereby the house generates all the energy required for the household’s domestic needs;
Achieving the target of net zero energy transportation whereby the house generates all the energy required for the household’s local transportation needs; and
Achieving the target of net zero energy food whereby the house integrates homescale agriculture in order to displace the industrial food system and enhance a household’s food energy balance.
The goal of the Montréal ZERO team is nothing less than changing the way builders and developers approach the design, construction and marketing of residential housing in Quebec. Rather than simply adding energy-efficient features to a conventional design, the Alstonvale Net Zero House incorporates considerations for the environment, the building site and the efficient use of resources by the occupants into every stage of the design and construction process.
Reservation Required:
Space is limited for this bus tour to the Net Zero House Tour and pre-reservation and pre-payment is required. The bus will leave from the parking lot in front of the Mark’s Work Wearhouse in Perth at 8:00 a.m. and will make another pick up from the parking lot at Staples Business Depot in Carleton Place at 8:30 a.m. The bus will return to Carleton Place at 4:30 p.m. and to Perth at 5:00 p.m. To reserve your space on this one- of-a-kind trip, contact Judy Fisk at 613-278-0816 or email at jefi@sympatico.ca.
